Fourth grader Hannah Cash, 8, speaks with "commander" Alicia Klausmeier, a lead educator from Challenger Learning Center of Colorado in Colorado Springs, during a "mission to Mars" activity Jan. 28 at Odyssey Elementary School in Falcon School District 49. Cash was one of three communications officers for the fourth grade classroom's shuttle recovery mission, a curriculum remotely hosted by Challenger Learning Center. Using an Apple iPad, the students relayed data from each team's navigation, cargo and transmission specialists to Klausmeierr. "We're doing this in memory of Christa McAuliffe," said teacher Diane Neff. She had played videos to explain the tragic shuttle explosion Jan. 28, 1986, which claimed the life of astronaut McAuliffe, a passionate educator. Neff said the mock shuttle missions keep space travel exciting, while putting to use science, technology and math skills. Four fourth grade classrooms will take the shuttle recovery challenge this week.
